The Musical Dome Cologne is a unique theater because of its extraordinary glass and concrete construction and at the same time an architectural landmark directly on the Rhine River promenade in the heart of the old city.
The musical theater is located in the immediate vicinity of the Cologne Cathedral and is the largest theater in the city, seating some 1,700 guests.
1996 Musical Dome theater’s grand opening
1999 The 1970s musical, Saturday Night Fever, celebrates its acclaimed German premiere and immediately becomes an absolute hit with cult status. Over 1.4 million spectators in close to 1,100 performances are brought to a fever pitch by the world famous songs of the Bee Gees.2003 The sensational run of Saturday Night Fever is followed in March by the premiere of the award-winning musical Jekyll & Hyde. This brilliant musical about the depths of the human soul and the struggle between good and evil captivates audiences with its stirring emotions.
2004 The most successful musical to come out of London’s West End, We Will Rock You, thrills the city on the Rhine until September 2008. Nearly 2 million spectators in 1,400 performances are rocked by the exceptional Queen musical, making We Will Rock You the most successful musical production to date in Cologne.
2009 Monty Python’s Spamalot, “the zaniest musical in the world,” celebrates its German premiere in the Musical Dome. The show that has won several Tony Awards set audiences on fire on Broadway in New York and in London’s West End. And in Cologne as well. Audiences were entertained to the hilt until September 2009 – by the loveable Knights of the Round Table and their whimsical sketches and iconic gags.
Along with the impressive long term productions, exciting guest performances appeared on stage at the Musical Dome that included David Copperfield, The Chinese State Circus, the Tap Dogs, Buddy Holly, Beauty and the Beast, West Side Story, The Rat Pack, Swan Lake, and Cats. In addition, the public thrilled to the Michael Jackson show, Thriller – Live, Grease, Elisabeth and the shadow dance show, Shadowland – as well as the oriental dance show, Troja, and Heisse Zeiten – Die Wechseljahre Revue.
Since spring 2012 the Musical Dome has become the temporary home (expected to be for three years) of the Cologne Opera during the renovation of the famed opera house. After a successful remodeling, the Cologne Opera celebrated its first premiere in the “Oper am Dom” with Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca.
Parallel to the performances of the Cologne Opera, in the spring and summer of 2013 the Musical Dome will once again be presenting first class guest performances, so audiences can look forward to the dancers of Irish Celtic, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, and Let It Be, the Beatles tribute from London’s West End. The Musical Dome, with its diverse and top class events program, makes a substantial contribution to the cultural attraction of the cosmopolitan city of Cologne.
