London Symphony Orchestra inaugurates the Mehr! Theater am Grossmarkt, press release - 07.03.2015
Hamburg’s Largest Theater Has Opened
The London Symphony Orchestra welcomed the 2,400 concert-goers with a “Moin, Moin” – the traditional Hamburg greeting – to the official opening concert of the Mehr! Theater am Grossmarkt on Saturday, March 7, 2015. Numerous guests from politics, business, and society attended the evening.
The London Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Gianandrea Noseda and with pianist Roman Zaslavsky, performed the opening concert in the new Mehr! Theater in Hamburg. This marks today the official inauguration of the visionary theater in the heritage protected Grossmarkthalle after 15 months of construction. After an opening address, Mehr! Entertainment CEO, Maik Klokow, symbolically handed over the keys to the house to the theater’s director, Nathalie Heinrich. With the opening of the Mehr! Theaters am Grossmarkt, Hamburg is gaining a new, highly modern and versatile venue for culture and live entertainment.
Maik Klokow, CEO of Mehr! Entertainment, is pleased with the successful opening concert. “The London Symphony Orchestra is not only an outstanding orchestra, it is also a symbol of the teamwork of many individual experts in a major mutual achievement. We, too, have worked together with many of those involved for two years up to today’s opening. I thank everyone who took part in this undertaking.”
Günter Irmler, Managing Director of Mehr! Entertainment: “In many ways this theater is setting new benchmarks. The unique atmosphere in the midst of the wholesale market fits right in with Hamburg. In no German city is there such a long tradition in the interplay of art and culture with harbor and commerce.”
Nathalie Heinrich, Theater Director in Hamburg on Mehr! Theater’s future program: “The opening concert today has demonstrated that our theater auditorium is a genuine quick-change artist and also acoustically a major win. Hamburg can rejoice in its new venue! We will offer a diverse program, from popular pop concerts to elaborate live shows. I am already looking forward to the upcoming premiere of WE WILL ROCK YOU on March 16.”
Besides Mehr! Entertainment’s own productions, the Mehr! Theater will also be made available to other event organizers and promoters. Up to 20 meter-high ceilings, a useable stage space that can be expanded from 320m² all the way to 1.440m², and an audience that can view the stage from up to four sides – that is unique in Hamburg. This allows innovative thinking in the planning of shows and events and Hamburg to continue to grow as a cultural capital.
Mehr! Theater am Grossmarkt
The Hamburg Grossmarkthalle, a wholesale market hall, was completed in 1962 under the supervision of architect Bernhard Hermkes and set new standards with its futuristic construction of glass and concrete. Today it is under heritage protection as one of the last examples of prestressed concrete construction in Hamburg. On November 14, 2012, the City of Hamburg, represented by the Ministry of Economics, Transportation, and Innovation/City Grossmarkthalle Management, and Mehr! Entertainment signed an agreement for the construction of a theater in a section of the 40,000 m²-large Hamburg Grossmarkthalle. The Hamburg Ministry of Culture Office for the Protection of Historic Buildings was present at all the discussions and planning sessions. By complying with current requirements, it was possible to bring a new cultural site into connection with all of the market’s present merchants and dealers.
This was an important step achieved toward the future. The goal is to open the Grossmarkt to a broader public with a sustainable concept and to establish a new cultural space.
The Mehr! Theater is completely integrated free-standing into the existing Hamburg Grossmarkthalle. The ceiling structure of prestressed concrete arches and the interior height of the Grossmarkthalle of close to 20 meters has been respectfully preserved in the architectural design of the theater and make an impressive feature of the theater.
The visionary theater, a veritable “quick-change artist,” offers a wide variety of possibilities for theater and musical productions, shows, events, rock and pop concerts, as well as exhibitions. The auditorium is designed to seat audiences of up to 2,400 – standing audiences of up to 3,500. The useable stage space can be varied from 320 m² to 1,440 m² and the stage can be view from up to four sides, making it usable for the widest variety of productions.
The auditorium, the foyer, and the bars are spaciously and open designed; the interior construction dispenses with distracting partition walls and suspended ceilings. The building stands out, not only due to its unique construction, but also because of its direct link to the waterfront and as a future attraction at the east end of Speicherstadt Boulevard.
After only 15 months construction time, the Mehr! Theater am Grossmarkt was inaugurated by a concert by the London Symphony Orchestra.
Sara Gruen’s Critically Acclaimed Best-Selling Novel, press release - 27.01.2015
WATER FOR ELEPHANTS to be transformed into a musical for Broadway
Producers Peter Schneider and Elisabetta di Mambro, in association with Broadway Across America and Mehr! Entertainment, announced today that they have acquired the worldwide rights to reimagine Sara Gruen’s Water for Elephants as a musical for the stage. The novel has been published in 43 countries and is the best-selling novel in the history of Algonquin Books, with over 10 million copies sold worldwide.
In this Depression-era novel, young Jacob Jankowski's life is dramatically changed when he is tossed by fate onto a train that is the home of the “Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.” Just shy of his veterinary degree, Jacob is hired to doctor the circus's animal menagerie. During this time, he bonds with Marlena, the beautiful equestrian star married to August, the charismatic but emotionally troubled superintendent of animals. The tempestuous triangle that develops becomes even more complicated when Rosie, an Asian elephant with a personality to match any of the humans, enters the picture. “The Great Gray Hope” for this third-rate traveling show raises the stakes—both literally and figuratively—in this romantic saga of love and trust pitted against danger and evil.
“I have loved Sara Gruen's Water for Elephants since it was first published and was captivated by its theatricality,” says Peter Schneider, producer of the global smash hit The Lion King. “It is so dramatic - a woman who is trapped in a relationship for all the wrong reasons meets and falls in love with a man for all the right reasons. Throw in an elephant as a matchmaker and you have the potential for a show of great imagination and emotional depth.”
“The novel evokes an exotic, colorful and gorgeous world and yet its very human emotions are instantly recognizable and universal,” says Elisabetta di Mambro, producer of The Old Woman, starring Mikhail Baryshnikov and Willem Dafoe. “We are just starting the creative process, beginning to talk with composers, writers, and directors who can help transform this vibrant world onto the musical stage. Aware of the exciting challenge ahead of us, we are grateful that Sara Gruen has given us the rights to bring her beloved story and characters to life as a global musical.”
“I am beyond thrilled to be involved in a creative process that is entirely new to me, especially with such wonderfully talented people at the helm to reimagine my work for the stage,” says Sara Gruen. “When I wrote the book, I hoped people would think about the way we treat those who are dependent on us—animals, the elderly, the debilitated, as well as the power of love in all its forms, and it's going to be amazing to see this message delivered in such an exciting medium.”
Sara Gruen is the #1 New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of Water for Elephants, Ape House, Riding Lessons, and Flying Changes. Her works have been translated into 43 languages, and have sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. Water for Elephants was adapted into a major motion picture starring Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson, and Christoph Waltz in 2011. She lives in western North Carolina with her husband and three sons, along with their dogs, cats, horses, birds, and the world’s fussiest goat.
Her stunning new novel At the Water’s Edge (a Spiegel & Grau hardcover) goes on sale March 31, 2015, and has received rave advance reviews. A young socialite in Philadelphia, a social misstep on New Year’s Eve in 1944 that changes everything, a journey by ship from America to Scotland during WWII, a husband, a best friend, and the tiny Highland village of Drumnadrochit—these are the opening snapshots in her fifth novel.
Water for Elephants was published by Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill in May 2006. Soon after its publication, the book appeared on national hardcover bestseller lists, including the New York Times list. The hardcover remained on the NYT list for more than 10 months. The trade paperback edition was published in the spring of 2007, rose to #1 on the New York Times bestseller list, and remained on the list for almost five years. It also has the distinction of appearing as the #1 book on the trade paper, mass market, and e-book New York Times bestseller lists simultaneously.
Peter Schneider, the Tony Award-winning producer of the global phenomenon, The Lion King, is also an acclaimed theater director and a former Disney film executive whose 17-year tenure at the studio included the development of such animated classics as “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin” and “The Lion King,” an extraordinary renaissance of creativity captured in the documentary, “Waking Sleeping Beauty.”
Elisabetta di Mambro has produced the work of Robert Wilson worldwide for the past 25 years, and runs a production company based in Italy, Change Performing Arts, responsible for commissioning, producing and presenting the works of established international artists in theater and in visual arts.
Broadway Across America (BAA) is part of the Key Brand Entertainment family of companies, which includes Broadway.com, and is under the leadership of John Gore (Owner & CEO). Current and past productions include Beautiful, Pippin, Million Dollar Quartet, Hairspray and The Producers.
Mehr! Entertainment (M!E) is one of Germany’s leading Live Entertainment companies that produces shows currently including Starlight Express, Dirty Dancing, CATS, among others. Founded by producer and CEO Maik Klokow in 2008, M!E also owns and operates theater venues in Hamburg, Bremen, Cologne, Berlin, Duesseldorf and Bochum and acts as a Rock and Pop Promoter with more than 1,100 concerts per year.

DIRTY DANCING brings the summer of 1963 at Kellerman’s in Catskill, New York back to life. Shy “Baby” Houseman is bored among all grown-ups during the holidays with her parents until she meets and falls in love with the hotel’s exciting dance master and show dancer Johnny Castle. Emotions start to rise, conflicts between the youngsters as well as other generations need to be sorted while the routine for the final dance of the season has to be practiced, too. The many dance scenes to music from the Sixties and Eighties take the audience into a world of grace and passion right through to the happy ending.
Eleanor Bergstein is a script writer, producer and director. Her most famous project DIRTY DANCING was one of the five most successful cinema films in 1987. The soundtrack has been sold over 44 million times to date. The title “Time Of My Life” sold millions and was awarded an Oscar for the Best Film Song as well as a Grammy for the Best Pop-Duett.
This story of success inspired Bergstein to create a stage version of DIRTY DANCING, enabling the audience to get as close to Kellerman’s as possible.
MEHR! Entertainment to build new theatre in Hamburg, press release - 14.11.2012
New construction in Hamburg’s Grossmarkt to become venue for high end live entertainment – building work to start in summer 2013
Germany’s number one musical metropolis will boast another theatre, and one of the most astonishing kind at that! The contracts have been signed: Grossmarkt Hamburg, represented by Government Agency for Economy Transport and Innovation / State Office Grossmarkt and Mehr! Entertainment have agreed on building a theatre in a part of the listed halls within Hamburg’s Grossmarkt.
This will open the Grossmarkt, which is a typical site of traditional Hamburg and has so far been reserved for trade only, to a far broader public due to this one-off new place of cultural interest. The new theatre will be built on roughly 10 percent of the entire Grossmarkt area. The Grossmarkt has an excellent infrastructure and is situated in the middle of the cultural belt around Hamburg’s city centre.
Senator for Economy, Frank Horch, looks forward to the new gain for Hamburg. “Next to London and New York, Hamburg is the third largest musical site in the world. The new theatre will enhance this and it will be a further tourist attraction, especially given the most unusual location as Hamburg’s Grossmarkt”.
Mehr! Entertainment, which currently runs seven venues throughout Germany, will expand its portfolio by a further and most prominent site.
“We are extremely proud to run one of our largest theatres in Hamburg in the future. Planning a new theatre on the grounds of the listed Grossmarkt halls is a vast challenge. Together with our team of architects, we have designed an attractive solution to integrate the theatre in a section of the existing industrial building as well as to create a venue which fully meets our demands for high-end live entertainment,” states Maik Klokow, General Manager and Producer at Mehr! Entertainment.
With this, Mehr! Entertainment further strengthens its position for activities in the very important location of Hamburg. The ticket-selling business, Deutsche Eintrittskarten TKS GmbH, which also belongs to the Mehr! Entertainment Group already moved its headquarters to Hamburg in January of this year.
Hamburg’s Grossmarkt halls were completed in 1962 under the direction of architect Bernhard Hermkes. It is a static work of art and, as one of the last examples of reinforced concrete buildings, it is listed.
The vast ceiling height and open view of the 8 cm thick reinforced concrete frame are most impressive. The audience will be able to experience this height throughout the theatre – the highest point measuring 20 meters above the theatre seat.
The new theatre will be fully integrated in the existing Grossmarkt halls. Overall, it will have the size of 8.000 square meters, which will be divided among three storeys. The stage will be on ground level and a stage tower with a height of 19,20 meters will be below the wavy roof dome. The auditorium will seat appr. 2.000 people.
Torsten Berens, General Manager of the Grossmarkt remarks: “Hamburg’s Grossmarkt is a centre of freshness in the North of Germany and it is its largest market place for fruit and vegetables. 400 companies alone and roughly 2.4000 employees enable a yearly stock turnover of 1.5 mio tons – a remarkable economic factor. The Grossmarkt was designed during the Fifties to meet the demands for shifting of goods in the fruit and vegetable market of that time. Its 40.000 square meters make it the largest trading area of its kind throughout Germany. Taking today’s actual demands into account, it will suffice to have a base area of 35.000 square meters. This makes it possible to include the new theatre as an enrichment for the Grossmarkt area, especially as opening hours of the Grossmarkt and play times in the theatre do not coincide.”
Construction work will start in summer 2013 – and it is expected to be completed by late 2014 / early 2015. One year before opening, it will be announced which production will be the first to play in this exciting new theatre.
